The massive plume of plastic waste floating in the Pacific Ocean has garnered lots of media attention lately. Turns out, the Great Lakes face a similar problem, but on a smaller scale.
A group of students spent their summer looking for plastic waste in the Great Lakes. Not surprisingly, they found the least amount of plastic waste in Lake Superior. The most plastic waste was found in, you guessed it, Lake Erie. (Poor Lake Erie always seems to bear the heaviest burden from humans’ abuse of the Great Lakes).
