Lake Erie and the Ohio residents and businesses who rely on the lake will catch a huge break this summer.
After a record setting toxic algae bloom in 2011, scientists are predicting moderate toxic algae blooms on the lake this summer. Here’s a link to the forecast from NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.
This is huge news for the lake, which supports one of the world’s largest fisheries and is the engine that drives northern Ohio’s recreational economy.
The algae blooms, which are fueled by excessive phosphorus loadings into the lake, hurt the lake’s walleye fishery and scare away tourists. The blooms also contain toxins that can cause liver ailments and, in extreme cases, death.
Algae blooms on Lake Erie discolor the water, harm fish and hurt tourism.
